Comparing Foundayo vs the Wegovy pill? You're looking at two once-daily GLP-1 tablets, both recently licensed in the UK. Foundayo (orforglipron) was approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on 10 August 2026.
That followed Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide), approved in June 2026.
Both belong to the same drug class and work in a similar way. But they differ in how they're made, how they're licensed, how you take them and the results seen in their trials. Here's what actually sets them apart.
Same drug class, very different routines. The biggest day-to-day difference is the Wegovy pill's empty-stomach rule.
What are Foundayo and the Wegovy pill?
Foundayo and the Wegovy pill are both GLP-1 receptor agonists. GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone your gut releases after you eat, and it helps regulate your appetite and blood sugar.
Both tablets mimic this hormone. They act on the parts of your brain that control hunger, helping you feel fuller for longer and reducing food cravings.1
They're made by different companies and aren't the same medicine. Foundayo contains orforglipron, developed by Eli Lilly. It was authorised by the MHRA on 10 August 2026, making the UK the first country in Europe to approve it.1
The Wegovy pill contains oral semaglutide, developed by Novo Nordisk. The MHRA approved it on 11 June 2026, as the UK's first GLP-1 tablet for weight management.2
One key licensing difference: Foundayo is authorised for weight management and for blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. The Wegovy pill is currently licensed for weight management only.1,2
Oral semaglutide for type 2 diabetes is sold separately as Rybelsus, at lower doses than the Wegovy pill. It's a distinct product.
What are the key differences between Foundayo and the Wegovy pill?
Here are the main practical differences to know about:
- Active ingredient - Foundayo contains orforglipron, a small-molecule, non-peptide GLP-1 receptor agonist. The Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, a peptide that needs specific conditions to be absorbed properly.
- Manufacturer - Foundayo is made by Eli Lilly. The Wegovy pill is made by Novo Nordisk.
- Licensed uses - Foundayo is licensed for weight management and for blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes. The Wegovy pill is currently licensed for weight management only.
- Food and water rules - Foundayo can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. The Wegovy pill has to be taken on an empty stomach with a small sip of water, followed by a 30-minute wait before eating, drinking anything else or taking other oral medicines.
- Dosing schedule - Foundayo has six dose levels, from 0.8mg up to 17.2mg. The Wegovy pill has four, from 1.5mg up to 25mg.
- NHS availability - neither is currently funded on the NHS. Both are awaiting evaluation by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for possible future NHS use.
Who can take Foundayo and the Wegovy pill?
Both are prescription-only medicines. A prescriber will assess whether you're eligible based on your medical history as well as your BMI.
Foundayo is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or from 27 with at least one weight-related health condition. It's also licensed for adults with type 2 diabetes who need extra help with blood sugar control.1
Have type 2 diabetes as well? Foundayo is also licensed to help control blood sugar, which may make it a good fit.
The Wegovy pill is licensed for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or from 27 with at least one weight-related health condition.2
Neither is suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. You'll need a full clinical assessment before starting either one, to check for anything else that might make it unsuitable for you.
How do you take Foundayo and the Wegovy pill?
Foundayo
Foundayo is one tablet, once a day, swallowed whole. Because it's a small molecule rather than a peptide, it doesn't need an empty stomach to be absorbed properly. So you can take it at any time of day, with or without food.3
You start on 0.8mg once a day. After at least 30 days, the dose goes up to 2.5mg, then through 5.5mg, 9mg, 14.5mg and 17.2mg, with at least 30 days at each level.3 After 2.5mg, each increase depends on how well it's working for you and how well you're tolerating it.
No food rules with Foundayo, but taking it at the same time each day makes it much easier to remember.
Wegovy pill
You take the Wegovy pill once a day on an empty stomach, after fasting for at least 8 hours, with a small sip of water. Then do not eat, drink anything other than water or take other oral medicines for at least 30 minutes.
Doing any of those too soon can reduce how much of the medicine your body absorbs.2
Do not take your Wegovy pill with coffee, tea or juice. Use water only, and no more than a small sip.
You start on 1.5mg once a day, then move up through 4mg, 9mg and 25mg, with at least a month at each dose.2
How effective are Foundayo and the Wegovy pill for weight loss?
Foundayo and the Wegovy pill haven't been tested against each other in a head-to-head trial. Any comparison comes from separate studies with different designs, lengths and participants, so treat these figures as a general guide rather than a direct comparison.
In the Phase 3 ATTAIN-1 trial, adults with obesity or overweight on the highest dose of orforglipron lost an average of 12.4% of their body weight over 72 weeks, compared with 0.9% on placebo.4 Around 6 in 10 people on the highest dose lost at least 10% of their body weight, and around 4 in 10 lost at least 15%.4
In the Phase 3 OASIS 4 trial, adults on 25mg oral semaglutide who stuck with treatment lost an average of 16.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, compared with 2.7% on placebo. Including people who stopped treatment early, the average was 13.6%, compared with 2.2% on placebo.5
Both trials ran for well over a year. Results build gradually, so give treatment time before judging it.
Both medicines are meant to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. Your own results will depend on your starting weight, how well you tolerate each dose and how consistently you take the treatment.
Are Foundayo and the Wegovy pill available in the UK yet?
The Wegovy pill has been available on private prescription in the UK since shortly after its approval in June 2026. You can order it from Pharmica after an online consultation.
Foundayo was approved by the MHRA on 10 August 2026, but you can't order it yet. Stock still needs to be made, imported and distributed through the UK supply chain before pharmacies can dispense it. UK pricing hasn't been confirmed yet.1
Neither treatment is currently available on the NHS. NHS access to either would depend on a separate assessment by NICE.1,2
What are the side effects of Foundayo and the Wegovy pill?
The most commonly reported side effects of both are digestive. They tend to ease over the first few weeks as your body adjusts.2,3
- Nausea, constipation, diarrhoea and vomiting - very common with Foundayo, affecting more than 1 in 10 people, and among the most commonly reported with the Wegovy pill. They're usually most noticeable after a dose increase.
- Indigestion and stomach pain - also very common with Foundayo, and reported with the Wegovy pill.
Severe stomach pain spreading to your back, or swelling of your face, lips or throat, needs urgent medical help. Call 999 or go to A&E.
Eating more fibre and drinking more fluids can help with constipation. If you have diarrhoea or vomiting, keep sipping fluids so you stay hydrated.
This isn't a complete list of side effects. Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine, and speak to your prescriber if you have any concerns.
When should you seek medical advice?
Speak to a prescriber or GP if:
- You have severe, ongoing stomach pain that spreads to your back, which could be a sign of pancreatitis
- You develop signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing
- You have persistent vomiting or diarrhoea and are showing signs of dehydration
- Your symptoms do not improve after several weeks of treatment
Foundayo or the Wegovy pill, which should you choose?
There's no single answer. The right choice depends on your circumstances.
Foundayo may suit you if you want more flexibility around meals and when you take your medicine, or if you also need help managing type 2 diabetes. The Wegovy pill may suit you if you're happy with a stricter morning routine, including if you're switching from the Wegovy injection.
Whichever you're considering, a full clinical assessment with a registered prescriber is the only way to confirm which treatment, if any, is right for you.
Frequently asked questions
Is Foundayo the same as the Wegovy pill?
No. Foundayo and the Wegovy pill are different medicines. Foundayo contains orforglipron, a small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist made by Eli Lilly, while the Wegovy pill contains oral semaglutide, a peptide-based GLP-1 receptor agonist made by Novo Nordisk. Both work in a similar way, but they're not interchangeable.
Which is more effective for weight loss, Foundayo or the Wegovy pill?
In separate clinical trials, the Wegovy pill showed a higher average weight loss (16.6% over 64 weeks with full adherence, or 13.6% accounting for discontinuations) than Foundayo (12.4% over 72 weeks at the highest dose). However, the two medicines haven't been tested against each other directly, so this should not be read as a head-to-head comparison.
Can I switch between Foundayo and the Wegovy pill?
Any switch between GLP-1 medicines should only be made under the guidance of a registered prescriber, who can assess your treatment history and determine a suitable starting dose. Do not switch, stop or restart treatment without speaking to your prescriber first.
Is Foundayo available to buy in the UK yet?
Foundayo received MHRA approval on 10 August 2026, but it isn't yet available to order, as stock still needs to be manufactured, imported and distributed through the UK supply chain. The Wegovy pill has been available for private prescription in the UK since shortly after its approval in June 2026.
Do I need to take Foundayo on an empty stomach, like the Wegovy pill?
No. Foundayo can be taken at any time of day, with or without food or water. The Wegovy pill must be taken on an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours, with a small sip of water, followed by a 30 minute gap before eating, drinking anything else or taking other oral medicines.
Does Foundayo have fewer side effects than the Wegovy pill?
Both medicines report similar gastrointestinal side effects, including nausea, constipation, diarrhoea and vomiting. As they haven't been compared directly in the same trial, it isn't possible to say definitively that one causes fewer side effects than the other. Always read the patient information leaflet for a full list of side effects.
Can Foundayo be used to treat type 2 diabetes as well as weight loss?
Yes. Foundayo is licensed in the UK for both weight management and to improve glycaemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes. The Wegovy pill is currently licensed for weight management only.
Will Foundayo or the Wegovy pill be available on the NHS?
Neither treatment is currently funded on the NHS. Any future NHS availability would depend on a separate evaluation by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
How much will Foundayo cost in the UK?
UK pricing for Foundayo hasn't yet been confirmed, as it has only just received MHRA approval. Pricing will depend on manufacturing costs, supply chain factors and the competitive landscape once the treatment becomes available through UK pharmacies.
