What are Opticrom Eye Drops?

Opticrom Eye Drops is a medicine that contains the active ingredient Sodium Cromoglicate 2%, a mast cell stabiliser that is used to treat allergy symptoms in the eyes.

What are Opticrom Eye Drops used for?

The Opticrom eye drops are used to alleviate discomfort associated with seasonal allergic conjunctivitis symptoms (hay fever) as well as perennial allergic conjunctivitis symptoms (year-long allergies caused by pet hair or dust mites). These symptoms could include:

  • Itchy Eyes
  • Watery Eyes
  • Red Eyes
  • Inflamed Eyes
  • Swollen Eyelids

How do Opticrom Eye Drops work?

The active ingredient, Sodium Cromoglicate 2%, works by stabilising mast cells in your eyes which are responsible for releasing histamine when triggered by allergic reactions. As a result of taking the treatment, mast cells release less histamine when coming into contact with allergens, reducing inflammation and irritation.

Therefore, Opticrom Eye Drops target the root cause of the symptoms, unlike some of the other antihistamine medications which target the histamine after it has already been released.

How do you use Opticrom Eye Drops?

The recommended dose is 1-2 drops in each eye, up to 4 times a day.

To take Opticrom Eye Drops:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly.
  • Remove the cap of the eye drop bottle.
  • Tilt your head back and gently pull the lower lid of the eye to form a pocket.
  • Hold the bottle upside down above your eye, but do not touch the eye with the bottle.
  • Press the bottle gently to release one or two drops into the eye.
  • Close your eye and apply light pressure to the area between the corner of your eye and your nose, to stop the drop from leaking out of the eye.
  • Repeat the process for the other eye.
  • Put the cap back on the bottle.

If you miss a dose, take your drops as soon as you remember, but do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed dosage.

How long does it take Opticrom Eye Drops to work?

It can take 2-3 days after the first use to feel a relief of symptoms, but if you still feel no relief after this time has passed it is recommended to consult a doctor.

Can I use Opticrom Eye Drops with contact lenses?

Opticrom Eye Drops contain benzalkonium chloride which can cause discolouration in soft contact lenses. If you do not use soft contact lenses, you should be able to use Opticrom Eye Drops, but you should remove your contact lenses before taking the eye drops and put them back in 15 minutes after taking your dose.

Who should not take Opticrom Eye Drops?

If you wear soft contact lenses, have dry eye disease or use eye drops for dry eyes, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have ever had an allergic reaction to eye drops.
