What is beclometasone nasal spray?

Beclometasone nasal spray is an aqueous solution containing the active ingredient beclometasone dipropionate, which belongs to a group of medicines called steroids (or corticosteroids). Beclometasone nasal spray provides 24 hour relief from hay fever symptoms. Each individual spray contains 50mg of beclometasone dipropionate.

What is beclometasone nasal spray used for?

Beclometasone is used to treat and prevent rhinitis, which is characterised by inflammation to the inner linings of your nose. This can be caused by seasonal allergies such as hay fever, or year-round allergies like dust mite or pet allergies.

How long does it take the beclometasone nasal spray to work?

It will take several days for the beclometasone nasal spray to take effect and reduce symptom severity. When used to treat hay fever, it can be beneficial to begin using the nasal spray a couple of weeks before hay fever season begins.

Who should not use beclometasone nasal spray?

You should not use beclometasone nasal spray without consulting your doctor first if you are allergic to beclometasone dipropionate, pregnant or breastfeeding, on any other medication, or if you have ever had surgery on your nose, a nasal infection, or if you have been using steroids for a long time.

What dosage of beclometasone nasal spray do I need?

For most people, it is necessary to use beclometasone nasal spray twice a day (once in the morning and once at night), with a dose of one or two sprays into each nostril. Once your symptoms have started clearing, you can reduce the frequency of your nasal spray doses. When you believe you no longer need the beclometasone nasal spray, you can stop your doses; if your symptoms increase again, you can continue your doses. You should not use beclometasone nasal spray continuously for more than one month without consulting your doctor first.

How do you use beclometasone nasal spray?

  1. Remove the dust cap from the beclometasone nasal spray bottle, and then ‘prime’ the nasal spray by pumping it a few times until a fine mist is produced.
  2. Blow your nose.
  3. Apply your forefinger and middle finger either side of the nozzle, with your thumb underneath the nasal spray. Close one nostril by pressing a finger onto the side of your nose.
  4. Bend your head slightly forward and insert the nozzle of the beclometasone nasal spray into your other nostril. Whilst breathing in through the open nostril, press down firmly on the nasal spray collar once or twice, then breathe out through your mouth.
  5. Repeat steps 2-3 for your other nostril.

How do you clean beclometasone nasal spray?

It is recommended that you clean your nasal spray at least once a week. To clean your beclometasone nasal spray, remove the dust cap and pull upwards on the collar of the bottle in order to remove the nozzle. You can then soak the nozzle in warm water for a few minutes before rinsing under a running tap. Allow the nozzle to dry fully before attaching back to the beclometasone nasal spray bottle and ‘prime’ the spray again until a fine mist is produced.

How do you store beclometasone nasal spray?

Keep beclometasone nasal spray out of sight and reach from children. Store in dry, dark conditions at room temperature. Do not use the beclometasone nasal spray past the expiry date printed on the label of both the spray and box. Discontinue use of the product three months after first opening it. In order to protect the environment, ask your local pharmacist how to dispose of beclometasone nasal spray.
