What is Allevia and what is it used for?

Allevia is a non-drowsy antihistamine medication used for treating hay fever symptoms (seasonal allergic rhinitis) such as sneezing, red or watery eyes and a runny, itchy or blocked nose. Each tablet of Allevia contains 120mg of the active ingredient fexofenadine hydrochloride.

How does Allevia work to relieve hay fever symptoms?

When exposed to pollen, your body may start to produce the chemical histamine which causes a chain reaction of allergic symptoms like inflammation, red and watery eyes, and a runny or blocked nose. The active ingredient in Allevia known as fexofenadine inhibits an allergic reaction to hay fever by blocking the histamine receptors in the spinal cord and stopping the chain reaction of hay fever symptoms.

How do I use Allevia?

For patients over the age of 18 and above, the recommended dose of Allevia is one tablet that should be taken with water once daily before a meal.

How long does it take Allevia to relieve hay fever symptoms?

Allevia should begin to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis within an hour of taking a dose and should continue relieving symptoms for 24 hours.

What are the benefits of taking Allevia?

The benefits of taking Allevia for hay fever are:

  • Fast relief from hay fever symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, headache and itchy, red, watering eyes.
  • Suitable for occasional or persistent symptoms.
  • Only a single daily dose is required.
  • Allevia is classed as non-drowsy antihistamine.

What is the difference between Allevia and Fexofenadine?

Allevia and Fexofenadine tablets both contain the same active ingredient: fexofenadine hydrochloride. Allevia is a branded version of its generic counterpart Fexofenadine. Both treatments are antihistamine medications that work identically when treating symptoms of hay fever.

Does Allevia make you drowsy?

The active ingredient of Allevia, fexofenadine hydrochloride, is classed as a ‘non-drowsy’ antihistamine. It’s unlikely that Allevia will affect your ability to operate or drive machinery, however if you do still feel symptoms of fatigue or drowsiness after taking a dose, your doctor can advise you on an alternative anti-drowsy hay fever medication.

Who should not take Allevia?

You should not take Allevia if you are allergic to the active ingredient fexofenadine hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients listed below.

You should talk to your doctor before taking Allevia if you:

  • Have problems with your liver or kidneys
  • Have or have ever had heart disease
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

You should also seek advice from your doctor before taking Allevia if you are on any medications that may contain aluminium and magnesium as they could interfere with the effectiveness of Allevia by lowering the amount of medicinal product that can be absorbed.

What if you forget to take a dose of Allevia?

If you forget to take your daily tablet of Allevia, do not attempt to take a double dose to make up for missed Allevia dose. Instead simply take your next dose of Allevia at the usual time.

What are the ingredients of Allevia?

Each Allevia tablet includes 120mg of the active ingredient fexofenadine hydrochloride. The tablet also includes microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinised maize starch, croscarmellose sodium and magnesium stearate in the tablet core, as well as hypromellose, povidone K30, titanium dioxide (E171), colloidal anhydrous silica, macrogol 400, red iron oxide (E172) and yellow iron oxide (E172) in the film coating.
