What is Clotrimazole 1% Cream used for?

Clotrimazole 1% Cream is an effective, fast-acting antifungal treatment used to treat fungal infections such as ringworm, athlete’s foot and fungal sweat rash. Clotrimazole 1% Antifungal Cream can also be used to help relieve external genital irritation caused by thrush, and it is suitable for both men and women.

Clotrimazole 1% External Cream is medically equivalent to Canesten 1% Cream but is available at a lower price as it is a generic medicine.

How does Clotrimazole 1% Cream treat fungal infections?

Clotrimazole Cream is highly effective at clearing fungal infections. The active ingredient clotrimazole works by destroying the fungus that is causing the infection. Clotrimazole is recommended for the treatment of athlete’s foot, ringworm and fungal sweat rash.

How does Clotrimazole 1% Cream treat thrush?

Clotrimazole 1% Cream contains the active ingredient clotrimazole, a powerful antifungal medicine that actively fights fungal infections such as thrush, destroying the fungus or yeast which has caused the infection. Clotrimazole Cream also helps to relieve irritation, itching and soreness caused by fungal infections. Clotrimazole 1% should be applied directly to the infected area of the skin and is also suitable for use on sensitive, external regions of the genitals.

How to use Clotrimazole 1% External Cream

Always use Clotrimazole Cream exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has advised. If you are not sure how to use it, check with your doctor or a pharmacist. It is advisable to follow these directions closely:

• Before use, pierce the tube seal by inverting the cap over the end of the tube and press.
• If the feet are infected, they should be washed and dried thoroughly, especially between the toes, before applying the cream.
• Clotrimazole should be applied thinly and evenly to the affected areas, two or three times daily and rubbed in gently.
• A strip of Clotrimazole Cream (½ cm long) is enough to treat an area of about the size of the hand.
• The duration of the treatment depends upon the type of infection. Use Clotrimazole for at least two weeks for candida (thrush) infections or at least one month for other infections.

The symptoms of skin infection such as itching or soreness should improve within a few days of treatment although signs such as redness and scaling may take longer to disappear. If symptoms persist, consult your doctor.

Do not suddenly stop using Clotrimazole 1% Cream as this may cause the symptoms of the infection to return.

Follow these simple steps to help Clotrimazole Cream work more effectively:

• Try to avoid scratching the infected area, even if it is itchy, to avoid damaging the surface of the skin and prevent the infection from spreading further.
• Always make sure to keep the affected skin surface area clean.
• Make sure to dry the affected area of the skin, but try to avoid excessive rubbing.
• Make sure to avoid sharing towels, bath mats and other hygiene items with others to avoid spreading the infection.
• Make sure to always wash your hands after treating or touching the affected area to prevent the infection from spreading.

If you have athlete’s foot, you help Clotrimazole Cream work more effectively by:

• Always thoroughly dry the skin between the toes.
• Always thoroughly wash socks, stockings or tights in hot water to clear out any shed skin or fungal spores.
• Try to change your footwear daily where possible.
