What is Epiduo Gel and what is it used for?
Epiduo is a topical skin treatment for acne vulgaris, the bacteria that cause acne, characterised by pustules, whiteheads, blackheads and spots.
What are its active ingridients?
It contains two active ingredients with different mechanisms working together: adapalene and benzoyl peroxide. The former belongs to a group of drugs known as retinoids and has anti-inflammatory properties. It also unblocks the pores to treat whiteheads and blackheads. The latter has proven to have antibacterial activity; it softens and peels the outer layer of the skin. It also counteracts the excessive secretion of sebum that is common with acne.
How do I use it?
Epiduo comes in the form of a gel and should be applied gently with your fingertips to the acne-affected area in the evening once a day to clean and dry skin. Just a thin layer is enough, avoiding the eyes and mouth. Hands should be washed before and after applying the gel. Using too much of the medication at one time will not improve the effects but rather increase the side effects of the medication.
How long does it take to work?
Epiduo starts working immediately and results can be seen after 1 to 4 weeks of treatment. The treatment should then be continued as acne will improve over time.
Are there any side effects?
Common side effects of this medication affect one in ten people and include dry skin, a skin rash, burning sensation, irritated skin, redness, and scaling. These side effects usually disappear after the first weeks of treatment, but if it’s too uncomfortable, wash your skin and apply non-spot forming cream to relieve the symptoms.
