Daktarin Oral Gel Product Information

Daktarin (Miconazole) Oral Gel is an antifungal treatment used to treat oral thrush, a common fungal infection that affects the mouth and throat. Oral thrush is caused by an overgrowth of Candida, a naturally occurring yeast in the mouth, which can lead to symptoms such as white patches, soreness and irritation inside the mouth.

Daktarin Oral Gel contains 2% miconazole, an antifungal active ingredient that helps clear the infection by preventing the fungi that cause oral thrush from growing and reproducing. As a miconazole oral gel, it is applied directly inside the mouth, where it works at the site of infection to relieve discomfort, support healing and clear the infection.

Daktarin Oral Gel is now back in stock at Pharmica. It is sugar-free, has an orange flavour and can begin to relieve oral thrush symptoms within a couple of days, with most infections clearing within 7 days of starting treatment.

Daktarin Oral Gel contains miconazole, an antifungal active ingredient that works by disrupting the outer membrane of fungal cells. This prevents the fungi responsible for oral thrush from growing and reproducing, helping to clear the infection over time.

Because the gel is applied directly inside the mouth, it works at the site of infection, helping to reduce soreness, irritation and white patches caused by oral thrush, while treating the underlying fungal overgrowth.

Oral thrush, also known as oral candidiasis, is a common fungal infection that develops inside the mouth and throat. It is caused by an overgrowth of Candida albicans, a type of yeast that naturally lives in the mouth in small amounts. When the balance of bacteria and yeast in the mouth is disrupted, Candida can multiply and cause an infection.

Symptoms of oral thrush can include white or creamy patches on the tongue, inner cheeks, roof of the mouth or throat, soreness or a burning sensation inside the mouth, redness or inflammation around the affected areas, an unpleasant or altered taste, pain or difficulty when eating or swallowing and cracked or sore corners of the mouth.

Several factors can increase the likelihood of developing oral thrush. These include recent use of antibiotics, which can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the mouth, regular use of inhaled corticosteroids such as asthma inhalers without rinsing the mouth afterwards, a weakened immune system due to illness or medical treatment, wearing dentures that do not fit correctly or are not cleaned regularly, poor oral hygiene, smoking, dry mouth and underlying health conditions such as diabetes.

Oral thrush is not usually a serious condition in otherwise healthy adults and can typically be treated effectively with antifungal medication such as Daktarin Oral Gel. However, if symptoms persist, recur frequently or affect someone with a weakened immune system, it is important to seek further medical advice.

After thoroughly washing your hands, apply approximately 2.5ml (half a measuring spoon) of gel to the affected area 4 times a day after meals. Spread the gel carefully around the inside of the mouth.

Try to allow the gel to coat the affected area before swallowing, as this can help the active ingredient remain at the site of infection for longer, improving treatment effectiveness.

If you are using dentures, Daktarin Oral Gel can also be applied directly to the dentures while they are removed at night to help prevent reinfection.

It is important to continue treatment with Daktarin Oral Gel for 7 consecutive days, even if symptoms improve sooner, as the infection may still be present.

Daktarin Oral Gel can start relieving symptoms of oral thrush, such as soreness and irritation, within a couple of days of starting treatment, as the active ingredient works directly at the site of infection. However, visible improvement can vary depending on how severe the oral thrush is and how early treatment is started.

Although symptoms may improve quickly, it can take up to 7 days to fully clear the fungal infection. It is important to continue using Daktarin Oral Gel for the full recommended course to help prevent the infection from returning.

The recommended dose of Daktarin Oral Gel is 2.5ml per application, which is equal to half a measuring spoon. This amount is usually enough to coat the affected areas inside the mouth without using excess product.

The gel should be spread evenly across the affected area rather than swallowed immediately to allow the active ingredient to remain in contact with the infection for as long as possible.

Daktarin Oral Gel should be applied 4 times a day, ideally after meals. Applying the gel after eating helps prevent it from being removed too quickly by food or drink, allowing it to stay in contact with the affected area of the mouth for longer.

Spacing each dose evenly throughout the day can help improve treatment effectiveness.

Like all medicines, Daktarin Oral Gel can cause side effects, although not everybody experiences them. Most side effects associated with miconazole oral gel are mild and tend to resolve on their own as treatment continues.

Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, dry mouth and a feeling of discomfort or irritation at the application site. These effects are generally short-lived and are more likely to occur during the first few days of treatment.

Uncommon but more serious side effects may include an allergic reaction, which can present as a rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing. If any of these symptoms occur, treatment should be stopped immediately and you should seek immediate medical attention.

Daktarin Oral Gel FAQs

Daktarin is a branded miconazole oral gel. The active ingredient in Daktarin is miconazole 2%, which is the same antifungal agent found in unbranded miconazole oral gel products. Both work in the same way to treat oral thrush.

Whether you are looking for Daktarin Oral Gel or miconazole oral gel, the treatment works in the same way and is applied directly inside the mouth to clear fungal infection and relieve symptoms such as white patches, soreness and irritation.

Daktarin Oral Gel is in stock and can be purchased from Pharmica after completing a short online consultation to ensure that the symptoms are consistent with oral thrush and that the treatment is appropriate, particularly if you are taking other medicines or have underlying health conditions.

Daktarin Oral Gel can be used to treat white patches in the mouth caused by oral thrush. These patches develop when Candida yeast grows excessively inside the mouth, often affecting the tongue, inner cheeks or roof of the mouth.

The active ingredient, miconazole, works by reducing the fungal overgrowth. As the infection clears, the white patches usually begin to improve alongside other symptoms such as soreness and irritation.

Yes, Daktarin Oral Gel should be continued for the full recommended treatment course even if symptoms improve before the infection has completely cleared. Oral thrush can still be present even when discomfort and visible symptoms begin to settle.

Continuing treatment for 7 consecutive days helps ensure the fungal infection is fully treated and reduces the risk of symptoms returning shortly after treatment stops.

Daktarin Oral Gel can be used for children aged 2 or over. The recommended dose for children aged 2 or over is 2.5ml, the same as the adult dose (a quarter of a measuring spoon), applied directly to the affected area 4 times a day after meals.

Yes, Daktarin Oral Gel is designed to be used inside the mouth and can be swallowed gradually after application. Allowing the gel to remain in contact with the affected area before swallowing helps maximise its effect at the site of infection.

Daktarin Oral Gel has a mild orange flavour, which helps make it easier to use throughout the treatment course, including for children aged 2 years and over.

Yes, Daktarin Oral Gel is sugar-free. This means it can be used without additional sugar exposure inside the mouth during treatment, which is particularly important when managing oral infections.
